Born in 1987, Terhas Berhe is an up coming Ethiopian photographer and filmmaker based in Addis Ababa. Below she outlines her passion for her country and why she took up photography. “Ethiopia has never been colonized, it has never been westernized by force, this makes it the most African country in Africa. We have the oldest branches of Christianity and an ancient Islam. Church and mosque stand side by side, and on the same street one can find Muslim (Halal) as well as Christian butchers.
The country ethnic diversity is demonstrated in the various languages. We have our own calendar which has 13 months. The main reason why I am doing photography or film is to change this image of Ethiopia. I am tired of hearing about the famine! The famine finished ages ago but most westerners still think it is still here!”
